Tourism is the largest employer in our region. An estimated 83,000 jobs in Horry and Georgetown counties are related to tourism.
Some of these jobs are hourly-wage positions, while others are management and supervisory. Beyond these jobs, there are a multitude of professional positions and support positions in nearly every industry that serve the tourism industry. Accountants, doctors, lawyers, engineers, architects, etc. all provide commercial support for businesses and individuals in the tourism industry.
As you would expect, these jobs --- both those directly related to tourism and those indirectly tied to tourism, generate millions of dollars in payroll taxes and income taxes. In fact, many of the small, independently-owned tourism businesses find the payroll to be their single biggest expenditure. Because the employment base in tourism is so large, it creates a significant tax stream that feeds state and federal government. Some analysts estimate that as much as 10% of our national payroll tax is contributed by tourism interests.
